Automatic imitation ââ¬â copying observed actions without intention ââ¬â is known to occur, not only in neurological patients and those with developmental disorders, but also in healthy, typically-developing adults and children. Previous research has shown that a variety of actions are automatically imitated, and that automatic imitation promotes social affiliation and rapport. We assessed the power of automatic imitation by comparing it with the strength of the tendency to obey verbal commands. In a Stroop interference paradigm, the stimuli were compatible, incompatible and neutral compounds of hand postures and verbal commands. When imitative responses were required, the impact of irrelevant action images on responding to words was greater than the effect of irrelevant words on responding to actions. Control group performance showed that this asymmetry was not due to modality effects or differential salience of action and word stimuli. These results indicate that automatic imitation was more powerful than verbal command. 1 Actions speak louder than words Introduction Even when we do not intend to imitate others, we are inclined to copy their body movements. Some feelings cannot be definite by using simple words; they need actions to speak for them. Words are cheap, anyone can tell anything, but they will not feel itââ¬â¢s truthfulness of these emotions until they are acted upon. ââ¬Å"Nevertheless, since words may sometimes be misleading, it is our actions that end up betraying our true nature.â⬠In conclusion, we can notice that, actions are excellent way to make people believe you. By using words you can persuade people, but it wouldnââ¬â¢t be effective as actions. So, even your speech would be good as Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s, anyway you need actions to suggest your words. Furthermore; words donââ¬â¢t have the effect that actions do on people. Words are easier to forget, while actions can be forgotten that easy; actions would last forever if they had a great impression on us. It is also impossible to show people how truthful your words are without an evident action. For example; when you say ââ¬ËI missed youââ¬â¢ to a friend, and you havenââ¬â¢t even bothered yourself to pick up the phone to know how he/she was doing, then obviously these words are just lies. Hence, actions are more realistic when it comes to expressing our emotions. Actions prove who is who in real case, while words only show what someone wants to be. Also, every person could say whatever he or she wants. To put it all in a nutshell, actions are the optimum way to make people believe you. Words could be a method to convey messages, but itââ¬â¢s not as efficient as actions.
